The newly built Saltaire Yacht Club is gearing up for the close of its season. The Friday night BBQ is still a welcomed and popular attraction and recently people en- joying their buffet meals included the Kunreuther and Semel families. Some of the children, after eating dinner, played and danced in front of the TV screen while some adults enjoyed catching up at the yacht club bar.
The annual Perlberger Soccer Cup, held over the extremely hot weekend of August 13, drew a large skilled group of participants and an enthusiastic crowd. The Orange team of James Goldfarb, Arthur Dechamps, Max Geistfeld, Sasha Fornario, Louis Dechamps, Matthew Weldon, Jonathan Calaluce, Erine Shuler and Nick Murphy (goalie) proved fierce competition to winning Blue team of Buddy Palmer, Nick Palmer, Liane Montero, Andrew Sosa, Brian Sosa, Tim Clarkin (goalie), David Sweedler, David Sabillon and Jacob Justh. Organized by Ralph Perlberger in 1970, the Saturday and Sunday afternoon soccer games introduced generations of Saltairians to the joys and rules of soccer. In organiz- ing the annual competition, Ralph has been ably assisted by Keith Miller and Donald Taffner. Mayor John Zaccaro, a long-time soccer player and fan, opened the awards presentation with a recogni- tion of the enthusiasm and skill of the players and the dedication of Ralph, Keith and Donald.
Bay front, the yacht club, pictured during dinner, is always a big draw. Cousins, Iris and Georgia, wearing matching dresses pose by the bay in front of the club. Harry Scanlan and Cy Murphy enjoy the shade on a bench at Brodkin Park. In the bay, a paddle boarder takes on a young rider.
